Sailfish Fishing

Guatemala Fishing Report February 29th 2012

The Sailfish are Leaping

You can’t blame them for leaping this year – especially on February 29th !
February is almost always a consistent month for fishing in Guatemala. The seas are calm, the weather is great and often the bait can concentrate as close as six miles from shore.
This has generally been the pattern that we have been experiencing for the last several weeks, It has been unusual to have to travel more than a dozen miles before finding nice clean, blue water and plenty of signs of activity. The sailfish have been found in good numbers on most days, with our anglers raising twenty plus fish and as high as fifty on some days.
There does seem to be fewer Blue Marlin in the spreads this season as compared to the previous two years – when we had raised a marlin most days as we trolled teasers and baits for the sails. We did have a good run of striped marlin earlier in the month, but these seemed to have moved on at least for the moment.
In the past, we would have said that November and March tend to be the best months for migrating Blue Marlin in Guatemala, so we are hopeful that we will be seeing more as we move through the month.
We have had some great inshore fishing this past month as well, with much better than average catches of big Roosterfish in the 35-50lb class…………………trophy fish worthy of lots of pictures !
March and even into April tend to still be great months for large numbers of sailfish in Guatemala, and we do still have some dates left if you want to get out of the cold weather and come down to enjoy the calm waters of Guatemala and some great fishing !
