Sailfish Fishing

Guatemala Fishing Report January 2013

Happy New Year !

It’s always good to start the New Year off with a bang! The bang from the fireworks may have stopped, but the bang of the teasers being popped to lit-up sailfish continues at a heady pace !!
Since Xmas we have enjoyed stable and pleasant weather in Guatemala with warm days but importantly somewhat cooler water temperatures in the 82-84deg.F range which is ideal to attract and hold bait and billfish.
There have been some very well defined temperature breaks that started out at about 45Nm from the dock around Xmas but have since come in closer at approximately 25Nm. These breaks have been holding large numbers off sailfish and the boats have seen some of the best numbers in almost a year. Our average has been in the 25 raises range per boat per day – but reports have come in of some outstanding numbers in the 70-80 raises range !! Some marlin and bull dolphin have been caught as well, but of course our charters have been focused heavily on the sailfishing !
If there are any individual anglers who would like to experience this feeding frenzy – we have one slot left for our shared trip January 10-14th 2013. Last minute – but it doesn’t get much better than this !!!

The International Light Tackle Tournament was held this past 4 days in Guatemala, with 31 boats competing. Despite the challenging conditions, the fleet managed to maintain the catch rate of recent weeks - managing to AVERAGE over 9 fish caught per boat per day for a total of 1169 billfish over the four days of the tournament.

Hopefully the fishing will only continue to improve as we move into the main part of the Guatemala Fishing Season. If you are considering a fishing trip to the warm Pacific waters this year, please visit our website or call as we do still have some dates available for the peak of the season in Guatemala.
