We are please to observe the recent uptick in support and active conversation across multiple dimensions for support in deleoping a ban ob billfish export - or at the VERY LEAST a ban on the IMPORTATION of billfish into the USA.
We are happy to acknowledge progress in a number of areas - but this is a complicated issue covering multiple cultural boundaries (eg the acceptance of billfish meat as a legitimate staple in China..........that also manages to export over 8000 metric tonnes/year as well !), to legal issues and loopholes (the brloken chain of compliance in the COE, Certificate of Eligibility)
It is also a but crazy that while the USA bans the harvest of billfish other than swordfish from Atlantic waters - it doesn't cover the Pacific waters. This opens up another huge loophole for countries that export meat to the USA - but have a connection to both the Pacific and Atlantic, therefore potentially enabling the "trans-shipment" of Atlantic Sailfish as Pacific caught ones (not that that is any better in our opinion !!) |
